I have started this project because I am tired of switching to Windows in order to design illustrations for papers or slides with a modern drawing tool. Now, for the Linux operating system and of course for other Unixes the Qt toolkit and the KDE project provide a perfect foundation for this kind of application.

N&H received more and more customer requests asking for a independent workgroup server solution running under LINUX, but using MS-Outook(TM) as the Client on the MS-Windows(TM) Desktop for use with shared calendars and task lists etc. and not limited to e-mail. MS-Outlook(TM) uses a MAPI Service Provider to store workgroup data centrally in MS-Exchange(TM) database or other 3rd party messaging servers. Based on this, N&H decided to start an internal project that implements a storage server that can run on LINUX where different workgroup clients and other applications can exchange workgroup data. BILL is now under the GNU public licence.

ONESYS, the COntent NEtwork SYStem, provides Open Source Software for Peer-to-Peer Content and Knowledge Management. An innovative technology allows CONESYS to decouple any digital object from the physical nodes and addressing schemes that carry them (e.g. URLs). This is called the Distributed Digital Objects (DDO) system, a kind of IP address combined with an arbitrary unique identifier for digital items. CONESYS provides interoperable connectors and a self-configuring router guiding the harvester module to collect content from distributed sources and legacy systems. CIPE is a lean tunnel protocol for Linux. CIPE-Win32 is a port of Olaf Titz's CIPE package from Linux to Windows NT. It is protocol compatible with versions 1.3.0 and greater of the Linux implementation. It OS compatible with Windows NT4.0 SP3 - SP6 and Windows 2000. It does not run (yet) on DOS based Windows versions. CIPE is an ongoing project to build encrypting IP routers. The protocol used is as lightweight as possible. It is designed for passing encrypted packets between prearranged routers in the form of UDP packets. This is not as flexible as IPSEC but it is enough for the original intended purpose: securely connecting subnets over an insecure transit network. The implementations mentioned below are actually in use in such an application. This implementation, like CIPE itself, is freely available under the GNU GPL. As opposed to IPsec, CIPE can be used on hosts behind masquerading routers.

The Debian bug tracking system is a set of scripts which maintain a database of problem reports. Key features: All input and manipulation of reports is done by email; developers do not need on-line web access or accounts on the host system. Outstanding, recently closed and other listings of reports are made available via a webserver, and by an email request bot. Each report has a separate email address for submission of additional information. WWW listings of bugs can be mirrored by email or HTTP. Core functions do not require CGI scripts. The Debian Project's instance has handled 16000 reports over the past 3-4 years, and currently has a database of 5000 reports totalling 90Mb (January 1997). GPL'd.

TouxDoux is a project to create a task manager. It currently seems to be somewhere between the alpha and beta stage, and is possibly usable as a personal task manager. The GUI is GTK/Gnome-based; the data store is SQL (Postgres or MySQL). Its not clear if any multi-user/groupware features are planned. The database structure is completely user definable. That is, the user can define the names, meanings any types of fields associated with a task. This allows the system to be modified to fit the needs of different offices, different individuals, different styles. Gantt and PERT charts via plugin. These look very raw right now, alpha-level/proof-of-concept.
